Plein Air: An Outdoor Experience

This workshop will introduce the student to the growing enthusiasm for plein air painting. dannielle mick has developed a unique approach to painting on location after years of experience. she will cover the ever changing light, values and learning to edit the panoramic view including the focal point. students will set up at a local spot and complete several studies. all media welcome. please bring a camera.

The Art of Pastel at the Belmar Arts Council

Take the time out of your busy schedule to spend the day immersed in art with award-winning artist Dannielle Mick. each student will create a small pencil study that will incorporate format, composition, value, and a light source. simplification of the subject will be encouraged. working from photographs, students will complete several small paintings. discussions will explore the principles of the pastel medium, including different paper surfaces, hard versus soft pastels, toning, and a lot more. demonstrations and class critiques will round-out this informative workshop. all levels. Explore new york's happening art scene in chelsea. the day will be spent in two of the areas well-known, multi-leveled buildings. over a dozen art galleries will be visited. we will travel from floor to floor discovering art from all backgrounds: contemporary, abstract, traditional, special exhibitions as well as co-op galleries. bring your camera and a sketchbook to jot down notes. this gallery tour will be followed by lunch and discussion at one of chelsea's well-known bistros. when you register you will be given instructions on time and place to meet.

Introduction to Pastel

This workshop will combine structured exercises and challenges to help you stretch your creative muscles as well as learning the basics of painting with pastels. simplification of the subject will be encouraged. working from photographs, students will complete several small paintings, building confidence and skill with each exercise. different paper surfaces and the varieties of hard and soft pastels will be explored. demonstrations and class critique will round out this informative workshop. bring an apron and pack a lunch. all materials supplied.

Color Theory I

No matter what medium you work in, a basic understanding of color theory is essential. this workshop will focus on the gray scale, color wheel, complimentary colors, warm verses cool and more. you will come away with the knowledge of how to mix color and make it work for you. you will never have to ask" how do I mix this color?" again! all levels welcome. bring an apron and pack a lunch. all materials supplied.

Get Loose with Aqua Media

Exploring Acrylic

What is acrylic? the dictionary tells us it is a glassy thermoplastic made by polymerizing methacrylic acid. but as a painting medium, acrylic can best be described as versatile. depending on the application it can resemble anything from a watercolor to an oil painting. acrylic is a wonderful medium for creating multiple layers on a variety of surfaces. in this hands-on workshop discover the array of mediums used to enhance your acrylic paintings. students will learn color mixing, toning, glazing, varnishes, and much more. demonstrations and class critique will round out this informative workshop. bring an apron and pack a lunch. all materials supplied.

Travel to Sandy Hook National Seashore and Paint Plein Air

Join award-winning artist Dannielle Mick for an unforgettable day of painting at the new jersey shore. you will travel approximately one hour from northern new jersey. ocean, bay and dunes will inspire and excite. The setting is perfect for a plein air art adventure. learn techniques of simplification, to create atmospheric perspective and to explore changing light and shadows as the sun moves towards sunset. Be prepared to work rapidly and learn how to paint a moving wave. you will complete several small studies. demonstrations and discussion will complete this art excursion followed by dinner at a local seafood restaurant. all media welcome.

Elements of Abstraction

This workshop will delve into a contemporary approach to painting. awaken the inner desire to paint outside of the box. we will explore direct, instinctual, and highly dynamic kinds of art that involve the spontaneous application of paint and markings to a variety of surfaces. compositions that lend themselves to a more interpretive painting will be covered. positive/negative space and placement will be incorporated with discussion of design elements. bring an apron and pack a lunch. all materials supplied.

Grounds for Sculpture

Grounds for Sculpture exhibits works by well-known and emerging contemporary sculptors in the museum buildings and sculpture park situated on 35 magnificently landscaped acres. the park has paved terraces, lakes, groves of bamboo, lotus ponds, water gardens and much more. everywhere you turn there is inspiration. it is located in hamilton, new jersey, approximately one hour and fifteen minutes from northern new jersey. the workshop will consist of a guided tour of the grounds followed by painting, sketching or photography at a location of your own choosing. then we will meet back together for a group discussion and critique followed by lunch at one of the unique restaurants on the property. we will meet at the location.

Night Moves – Nocturnal Painting

As the light moves from dusk to twilight, the landscape subtly shifts, colors deepen and night gradually falls. students will learn the techniques of using a dark palette as they unlock the magic of the night plein air. Basics of color, light, composition and atmospheric qualities will be taught. learn how to paint quickly as the light changes. all media. group discussion and critique will end this exciting workshop. pack a light supper.

Photo Management

This workshop focuses on working on your computer with photos you've taken with your digital camera. learn how to manipulate your images in the programs you already have (please mention which photo programs you have when registering for this workshop) and learn about other available options. importing, resizing and inserting images will all be covered, and there will be a discussion on terminology such as ppi and resolution. we will also discuss online submissions and requirements of art for show applications. pack a lunch.
